Steve Baker, Lexington councilmember and businessman, decides against running for open SC House seat

Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) - Steve Baker, a successful and hardworking Lexington businessman and member of the town’s council, said Tuesday afternoon that he has decided not to run for the house seat recently vacated by the resignation of Rick Quinn, Jr. Baker had been contemplating the decision to run for a higher office, but when contacted over the weekend, he said that he was reconsidering the decision to run because of his young family, his business life, and his commitment to serve the people of Lexington. He has now said he has officially decided to stay where he is and focus on other priorities right now.

In an e-mailed statement Baker said, “2018 holds excitement for the voters of Lexington as we look to elect a new House member to represent us. The decision to run for House District 69 has been something I have been considering for months now. After spending the holidays with family, and reflecting on my priorities for the new year, I have made the decision not to run for House District 69. My best energy and efforts need to be poured out first in my family as I and my wife look to grow our family and Lord-willing have another baby in 2018, professionally at Baker Collision Express, and in my service as a member of the Lexington Town Council. We have some exciting developments at the town, including the redevelopment of the Main St. corridor that I wish to see continue. With those considerations, I have decided against running and wish all the best luck to those who are.”

Baker is currently the comptroller of his family’s business, Baker Collision Express, one of the most respected collision repair centers in the Midlands. They currently have three locations, repair thousands of cars annually, and have many employees that keeps Baker busy at work.

Additionally, A little over a year ago, the people of his area of the town of Lexington entrusted him as their representative on town council. As he said in his statement, there’s a great deal going on in Lexington, and he hasn’t yet completed a full term there where there’s more work yet to do.

Most importantly, Baker is a man of faith who is young and has a young wife. They currently have one young child. He has expressed in his statement, and in person, his unwavering commitment to his family. Baker said that he feels he should focus on growing that little family now; politics and a higher level of public service can come later.

Baker has not closed the door on a run for some other office in the future. In a recent interview he said that once he’s completed some of the things he’s set out to do in Lexington, the business is at another level, and his family is where he and his wife want it to be personally, he may be called to serve in another capacity. What that is, remains to be seen.
