Head on collision happens in front of Chapin Post Office Tuesday morning
Chapin, SC (Paul Kirby) 11:42 a.m. – A pickup and an SUV collided in a near head-on accident Tuesday around 11:00 a.m. The accident happened right in front of the US Post Office on Chapin Road. The pickup actually ended up on the sidewalk and the mid-sized SUV came to rest facing Newberry County just to one side of the center lane.
Ladder 11 out of the Chapin fire station responded as did a fire engine out of one of the Chapin area’s outlying stations. The battalion chief over the North Region responded and an EMS unit from Lexington County. Most extra equipment was returned to quarters before they arrived on the scene after it was discovered that no one was trapped and there were only minor injuries. Chapin Police Chief Seth Zeigler said that he was not on scene because he was on departmental business outside the town, but did hear by radio that an elderly woman was being checked by EMS.
The Chapin Police Department was assisted by deputies from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department with traffic. That was re-routed through the car wash and the Publix parking lots so that the main road through the heart of the town wasn’t blocked for long.
As of this writing, the cause of the collision was still under investigation. The extent of anyone who may have been injured in the wreck has not been released.
