SUV wreck traps two, closes road between Pine Ridge and Gaston

Gaston, SC (Paul Kirby) – An SUV overturned at the intersection of Busbee and Fish Hatchery Roads Wednesday just before 12:30 p.m. The wreck trapped two occupants in the vehicle and blocked the road for more than 30 minutes. This was at the period in which the heaviest of Wednesday’s snow was falling in the area, although it didn’t appear to be coating the road or causing significant traffic problems.

Lexington EMS responded with several ambulances and a supervisor to the scene, and the fire service had equipment and personnel from Gaston, South Congaree, and Edmund as well as a battalion chief on the scene. There were also a number of law enforcement officers that were helping with traffic as the road was completely closed.

First arriving rescuers reported that the vehicle was off the road and on its side. They also said that one of the patients was, “heavily” entrapped. Firefighters quickly freed one of the victims from the wreckage, but the second patient required some time to cut from the twisted vehicle. The crews had to use heavy hydraulic tools to extricate them.

The condition of the victims hasn’t been released by county officials. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the accident.
