Lexington, SC (Angelica Iglesias) – A new coffee shop has made its way to Lexington, and it is making a difference. Second Wave Coffee and Books is a non-profit book store and coffee shop focusing on retail training for people with disabilities.
The program is run by The Arc of the Midlands. Last year, they were donated 5,000 books, so a coffee and book shop seemed like the perfect fit. According to their mission statement, Second Wave Coffee and Books “exists to create a community with and for individuals with disabilities to work and learn valuable skills for life. [We] employ adults with disabilities and provide assessment, skill development, and supported employment in the retail setting.”
Second Wave Coffee and Books is bridging the gap between employers and applicants through direct social and career training. Their applicants learn skills and receive opportunities they might not otherwise get.
Second Wave is located at 529 South Lake Drive in Lexington, SC. People interested in applying or learning more about the program should call (803) 693-5746.
