Chapin United Methodist Church raises $65,000 for Screaming Eagles Athletic Club

Organization is currently campaigning to build “field of dreams”

Chapin, SC (James Bowers) - Chapin’s Screaming Eagles Athletic Club gives children with special needs the thrill of playing sports. Their neighbors in the community have thrown their support behind the club and its purpose, actively volunteering in its activities while working to raise funds for the Screaming Eagles and their goals.

This past Sunday, they got another big boost when Chapin United Methodist Church presented them with a $65,000 check. The church’s congregation had raised the money during its Christmas Eve services and the club will put these funds toward its “Field of Dreams," a high-school caliber baseball stadium where the Screaming Eagles will play and practice. Club founder Jenny Bowers says the goal is to give these kids the same experiences as any other kids. Among the organizations other goals are summer camps for special needs children and a specialized daycare center for this population.

Chapin United Methodist is one of several organizations that have contributed funding, equipment, and time to the club. Chapin High School students are heavily involved in the Scraming Eagles’ endeavors, playing against the team and regularly raising money for the club. Newberry College, the American Legion, the Chapin Rotary Club the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, and the University of South Carolina are among the other groups that have taken these Screaming Eagles under their wing.

Additionally, the Lake Murray Women’s Club will have an Oyster Roast to benefit the club on Saturday, January 27.The event will take place from 5:30pm-10:30pm at the Timberlake Country Club in Chapin Tickets can be purchased for $40 each.
