Train crash victims identified as Amtrak employees

Pine Ridge, SC (Paul Kirby) – Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher has now identified the two people who were killed this morning in the train crash in Pine Ridge as two employees of the Amtrak train crew. Fisher said the victims were Michael Kempf, 54, of Savannah, Georgia, the engineer of the train, and Michael Cella, 36, of Orange Park, Florida who was the conductor. The two were killed this morning when the Amtrak train collided with a freight train at the intersection of Pine Ridge Drive and Charleston Highway about 2:25 a.m.

The first responders treated or dealt with more than 140 people who were on the train at the time of the collision. People were either treated for their injuries at local medical facilities, or they were transported to Pine Ridge Middle School where they were cared for by the American Red Cross.

Coroner Fisher said that autopsies were underway. She has promised to release the exact cause of death once those are completed.
