Muralist paints mural depicting Exploration at the South Congaree Pine Ridge Branch Library
South Congaree, SC (Jimmy Poluszek) – Recently, the South Congaree Pine Ridge Branch Library commissioned artist Kristina Huggins to paint a large mural to enliven a plain wall that’s to the right of the entrance. Huggins spent about 10 hours working on the project, and unlike many of her other murals, this one is painted on wood. This would allow the library to move the piece if it ever undergoes renovations or needs the space for something else. This helps to ensure the art's longevity. Huggins has also painted two murals for the Lacy School of Cosmetology, which is no longer in business, and others, including one at a bingo hall near Saint Andrews Road.
The library requested she paint the mural in hopes of enhancing the building’s visual appeal and inspiring people to read. Huggins’ background is in cosmetics, and she currently works as a cosmetology instructor. Painting murals is a hobby for her, something she really enjoys doing. “The library itself is really why I wanted to do the mural, it is a hidden gem of our community,” she said. She was glad that the library let her choose what to paint, and she took the idea and ran with it.
Huggins has a great love of reading. She wanted her mural at the library to convey that anyone can open up a book and then be transported by its content anywhere they want to go. For that reason, the mural’s theme is Exploration. One side of her mural portrays the vastly unexplored realm of space, while the other depicts an adventure on the seven seas, sailing toward uncharted territory.
The South Congaree Branch Library is a part of Lexington County’s library system. It is located at 200 Sunset Drive in South Congaree near the rodeo arena. Everyone is encouraged to come by and see the new mural and enjoy the library.
