ATV rider seriously injured in crash near Pelion

Pelion, SC (Paul Kirby) – The rider of an ATV was seriously injured Tuesday evening after crashing the machine in a field near James Dunbar and Old Charleston Roads just outside the town of Pelion. The accident happened about 7:00 p.m.

Units from Lexington EMS and the fire service responded to the call. First arriving medics evaluated the patient and decided that his injuries were severe enough to request a medical helicopter from Lifenet, a private air ambulance service that flies out of a base behind the Irmo Fire District’s headquarters.

The helicopter flew into a landing zone at Edmund First Baptist Church. There, another fire service unit had already arrived to prepare the landing zone prior to the approach of the chopper. The patient was transported from the Lexington County’s ground ambulance to the helicopter and flown to the regional trauma center at Palmetto Richland. At this point, the condition of that rider is unknown.
