Lexington firefighters quickly contain fire at steel company near Cayce Monday

Cayce, SC (Paul Kirby) – A fire in the wall of a steel fabrication business on Congaree Drive near Cayce had firefighters rushing to the business mid-day Monday. According to David Kerr, the county’s Director of Public Safety, Lexington County’s 911 center received the call 12:23 pm. According to Google, Campbell Steel, a company that fabricates items out of stock steel pieces, is located at 2200 Congaree Drive where it intersects with Grover Street just outside the city limits.

Director Kerr said that when the fire crews arrived, they found an electrical fire within a wall in the shop area of the business. The power to the area was secured and the fire was quickly put out. Besides the units from Lexington County, Cayce DPS responded with an engine and the West Columbia FD had a battalion chief respond to help. Lexington County units that responded to the fire included Ladder 5 out of South Congaree, Engine 13 from Edmund, Engine 9 from Oak Grove, Squad 10, a specialized truck that adds manpower and specific tools to the response,which is based in Lexington, Battalion Chief #2, and Fire Marshal #4, the officer that is responsible for fire inspections and prevention in that area.

According to Kerr, the fire didn’t heavily damage the business and they were back in and up and running the same day. No one was injured fighting the fire and no estimates on the cost of the repairs was available.
