Irmo PD captures three after pursuit of stolen car
Irmo, SC - Officers from the Irmo Police Department were on patrol Tuesday afternoon around 4 pm when they were alerted that a stolen vehicle was spotted traveling through the town. Officers found that vehicle and initiated their blue lights and sirens and signaled for the drive to pull over. The driver refused to stop and led police on a pursuit that took them to the 2900 block of Dreher Shoals Road where the vehicle lost control and crashed. The driver and one passenger led officers on a short foot chase where they were both apprehended nearby. A third passenger stayed with the vehicle and was found to be a 16-yearold female.
All three occupants of the stolen car were transported to the hospital due to the collision. Police have said they were being told that they are not life-threatening injuries and one passenger has already been released. That passenger, Kenneth Kitchens, is charged by Irmo Police for Failure to Stop on Police Command and was transported to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center for booking. The 16-year-old female was released to her parent. No other injuries have been reported to the Irmo Police because of this pursuit.
Investigators are working with the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department due to the vehicle being reported to them as stolen. The roadway where the collision occurred was partially blocked as the South Carolina Highway Patrol investigated the collision. This is standard procedure to have the SCHP investigate collisions that occur when a pursuit takes place.
More information on the driver will be released once it becomes available. He was at Richland Memorial Hospital late last night being treated for his injuries from the collision.
