South Congaree area resident Jerry Sanders files to run for Lexington County Council District 9
South Congaree, SC – South Congaree area resident Jerry Sanders has filed to run for Lexington County Council District 9, a district that covers Cayce, Pine Ridge, Dixiana, and parts of Edmund. Sanders calls himself a “Common working man” who has worked on campaigns for others in the past but never held public office himself. In explaining why he decided to file, Sanders said that District 9 had been treated like, “The redheaded step-child of Lexington County for too long!” Sanders said that he felt as if the residents of all of the southern areas of Lexington County were being ignored when it came to county services and that needed to change.
As a case in point, Sanders said that he would work to bring a traffic light to the dangerous intersection of Edmund Highway and Princeton Road just west of South Congaree. “That intersection is within a mile of my house and I have seen lots of bad wrecks there. If you elect me to county council, I’ll make sure we get a stoplight there that would stop all that.” The intersection was especially dangerous when it was a part of the detour for Ramblin Road after it was damaged during the floods of 2015. “There were lots of wrecks there and we didn’t get the light we needed then. We should get one now.” Sanders also said that litter was a major concern of his. “Our roadsides are terrible and yet we have inmates that are sitting in prison taking it easy. They should be made to get up and clean up the trash on these roads,” Sanders said.
If elected, Sanders said he would fight for government water and sewer to be extended along the Fish Hatchery Road corridor toward Pelion. He said if that was done, more homes could be developed allowing more people to move into that area. He would also like to see more service type businesses be brought down Fish Hatchery Road through Pine Ridge and beyond that into the county.
In the past, Sanders has been very involved in service. He was an early member of the South Congaree VFD, a member of the Jaycees for more than 23-years, is a 32 Degree Mason, a member of the Jamil Shrine Temple, a past member of the Optimist Club, a past member of the Executive Committee of the South Congaree Precinct of the Republican Party. He worked in various campaigns including the late Congressman Floyd Spence’s. He was very active in the party in the early 1980’s as well.
Sanders said that he would appreciate the support of all the voters of the district in his efforts to serve the people of Lexington County in the future. He asks you for your vote onJune 12th in the Republican primary.
