Lexington businessman Mike Sturkie files to run for open Lexington One board seat
Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) Lifelong Lexington resident Mike Sturkie has announced his candidacy for the open seat on Lexington School District One’s Board of Trustees. In doing so, Sturkie said, "I have always felt called to serve my community and I am excited about the opportunity to positively impact the future leaders of our community and state by serving on the Lexington District One’s School Board."
Sturkie's family has been a fixture of Lexington One for decades. His wife of 36 years, Kathy, has served as a teacher's assistant, substitute, and volunteer for over 20 years at the area’s schools. All three of their daughters graduated from Lexington One schools as well.
Sturkie, the owner of S&T Grading & Excavating, Inc., says, "I am running to ensure that my grandchildren, and every child in our district, has access to the education they deserve." He believes that funding is the most critical issue facing the district. "It is imperative that we provide appropriate pay to attract and retain the best teachers, but we must also practice fiscal responsibility to ensure taxpayer dollars are spent wisely."
Sturkie believes that his years of experience in heavy construction will be an asset once he’s elected to the board. As the district grows and expands at an amazing pace and new school construction and the renovation of older schools is often on the fore-front of the district’s priorities list, Sturkie believes he will bring a unique skill set that can benefit the district, its tax-payers, and students. He’s been involved in building from the first moving of dirt to the finished structure and he believes he can make a powerful difference when the school district is planning and building for its future.
Sturkie says that he welcomes questions regarding his candidacy and would appreciate your vote in the special election on June 19, 2018.
