Fatal wreck and vehicle involving tractor trailer and car has I-20 west traffic at a standstill Suns

Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) – A multi-vehicle accident that involves a tractor trailer tuck, and a number of vehicle has killed at least one person and a vehicle is on fire near the 61 mm west bound on I-20. This is very near the Sunset Boulevard overpass. The call regarding the accident came in just after 11:00 a.m. Thursday morning.

Firefighters are currently on the scene and are reporting that at least one car that was on fire is out. Another is currently burning. They have confirmed a fatality and a tractor trailer trucks is involved. They are also reporting that at least one person is still entrapped in the wreckage of the collision. I-20 is closed in the west lanes at Sunset Boulevard while firefighters from Lexington County and the Irmo Fire District are working the scene.

At this point, ALL of the west bound lanes of I-20 are closed at Sunset Boulevard. Fire and other emergency equipment have been going to the Sunset Boulevard overpass and travelling backward to the accident in the closed lanes. At this time, fire commanders are reporting that multiple vehicles are involved, possibly as many as seven, and it may take some time for the interstate to begin flowing again.

Deputies with the Lexington County Coroner's Office are enroute. The SC Highway Patrol also has troopers on the scene and will lead the investigation. We will update this story as we learn more information.
