School District Five announces new principal of Irmo Elementary

Irmo, SC - Veteran educator Shannon Wiley has been named the new principal of Irmo Elementary School. Wiley has served as assistant principal of the school since 2014. She replaces Tina McCaskill, who will become the district’s new director of elementary education beginning on July 1. “It’s an honor to be the next principal of such a great school,” Wiley said. “There’s a feeling you get in the halls of Irmo Elementary that is hard to describe. It is a feeling of love and acceptance…that we are all here to help our students succeed. I look forward to continuing the excellent standards we’ve set here for our Irmo Elementary family.” Wiley has been a professional educator for more than 17 years. She attended the College of Charleston, earning a bachelor's degree in elementary education and two masters’ degrees in education from Columbia College and in education administration at the University of South Carolina. Before becoming assistant principal at Irmo Elementary, she was a literacy coach at Seven Oaks Elementary and Francis Mack Primary School. Wiley previously taught elementary grade levels in Lexington Two, Lexington Four and Charleston County. “When district staff and teacher-leaders sat down to look at the characteristics they wanted in the next Irmo Elementary School principal, Ms. Wiley's name came to the top of the list,” School District Five Superintendent-elect Dr. Christina Melton said. “She uses a growth mindset for herself, her staff and her students…She also has a strong reputation as an instructional leader and an educator focused on relationship-building. Those are characteristics that made Ms. Wiley the ideal fit for Irmo Elementary School’s continued success.”
