White Knoll Track star Alan Alvarez signs with North Carolina State in Thursday ceremony
Alvarez was 2018 SCHSL 5A 100-meter dash state champion
Lexington, SC (James Bowers) - Alan Alvarez has parlayed his decorated White Knoll High School career into an opportunity to compete at the next level. The 2018 SCHSL 5A 100 meter dash state champion signed a letter of intent with North Carolina State University during a Thursday morning ceremony in White Knoll’s library. Alvarez says he chose the Wolfpack because of a track program that he says “speaks for itself.” “It’s a great program with great coaches,” Alvarez said. “I just feel like NC State is the place where I can thrive the most.”
Alvarez chose NCSU over Connecticut and Georgia Tech, capping a “stressful” recruiting period. Alvarez began running track at the age of 8 as part of Irmo’s Storm Track Club. He has been part of the White Knoll T&F program since seventh grade and says that it was during his junior year that he realized he could “take it to the next level.”
Alvarez had a decorated career with the Timberwolves. The state title is only one of his accomplishments. His list of accolades includes multiple all-region and all-state nods among recognition as the Region 5-5A Male Athlete of the Year and the Mike Moore Track and Field Athlete of the Year. This award is presented to the best track and field athlete in the region in honor of the late Irmo High School coach.
Coach DeAngelo Bryant is proud of his student-athlete, who is one of many college-bound competitors coming out of his WKHS program. “He is the definition of a leader, both vocally and by example,” Bryant said. “He is a coach-athlete. He was not only trying to work on his craft, but help his teammates as well, and your program can really thrive when you have athletes like that.” Bryant also lauds Alvarez’s participation in community service and outstanding academic performance, which has earned him some additional funding to aid him at NCSU.
Alvarez headlines a long list of recent White Knoll T&F alumni either bound for, or currently competing at the college level. His teammate, LJ Gray, will both run track and play football for Limestone College next year, while 2017 White Knoll grad DeAngelo Jacobs currently runs track for Wingate University. The list also includes Jeremy Covington, (Lincoln Memorial), and Avery and George Griffin (University of South Carolina). Bryant says the plethora of T-Wolf track stars competing at the college level gives his kids “icons” to look up to, encouraging them to achieve similar success.
