Fatal wreck closes part of St. Matthews Road east of Swansea

Sandy Run, SC (Paul Kirby) – Lexington County’s fire and EMS units responded to a serious accident that has resulted in a fatality Wednesday afternoon in the area of St. Matthews (SC-6) and Calvary Church Roads at approximately 2:30 p.m. The first fire units that arrived on the scene reported that someone was “heavily” entrapped in the wreckage of a truck that appeared to have left the road and crashed. Law enforcement officers began arriving on the scene and helped block a portion of the road while the medical crew checked the person in the truck. Once they discovered that the person had passed, they notified the Lexington County Coroner’s Office.

Witnesses passing the scene reported that some of the first responders had taken sheets and covered the passenger area of the truck from view to protect the dignity of the deceased person in the vehicle. Coroner’s representatives were on the scene by 3:40 p.m. dealing with their responsibilities and law enforcement officers were investigating the cause of the collision. Fire units finally left the scene at approximately 4:00 p.m. The coroner will not reveal the name of the deceased until family members have been properly notified.
