USC Coach Dawn Staley makes appearance at final "Educate My Sole" assembly

Batesburg-Leesville, SC - On Tuesday, May 22nd, B-L Elementary School hosted its final “Educate My Sole” assembly of the school year and it was one to remember as USC Women’s Basketball Coach Dawn Staley made an appearance along with her dog, Champ. Coach Staley, who is a co-founder and President of the “Educate My Sole” initiative, helped to give out free sneakers that day to more than 120 students at the school.

“Educate My Sole” is a contest for students in third through fifth grades that places emphasis on attendance, academics, behavior and physical fitness. At the end of each nine weeks, a rubric that was based on these core areas was used to determine which class in each grade level was that period’s winner. Then, each student in the winning classroom in the third, fourth and fifth grades received a brand new pair of sneakers. For the fourth and final nine weeks, however, administrators decided to do things a little differently to maximize the number of winners. As a result, the top five performing students in every class at BLES received a new pair of shoes
