Water main leak thought to be source of sink hole in Gaston highway

Gaston, SC (Paul Kirby) – A water main break in Gaston Saturday is thought to have caused a sink hole to form in a turn lane of Hwy. 321 south in Gaston. According to Major Stephen Watkins of the Gaston Police Department, after the road began to cave in, they were able to isolate the danger to a turn lane at Hwy 321 and Woodtrail Drive. Watkins said that personnel from the Gaston Rural Water District were on the scene repairing their line Saturday afternoon and the SCDOT was then planning to move in and work through the night if necessary to repair the road bed and get the lane back open.
