“Bad Moms” Group Hoping to Help Area Women
Gaston, SC (Gail Fallaw) - It began with a movie; starring Mila Kunis, Christina Applegate, Kristen Bell and others, “Bad Moms” was released in 2016. The basis for the movie is overworked moms. Too much to do, too little time, no appreciation, and no privacy. The theme resonated with moms everywhere, and “Bad Moms” groups and clubs have popped up all over Facebook.
The Midlands area has its own closed Facebook group, “Bad Moms Club,” headed up by Karylin Nicole LeVan and Marina James of Cayce/West Columbia. It started out as a place to vent or ask for advice about parenthood, marriage, you name it… As LeVan put it, “what’s posted on the page, stays on the page.” It’s meant to be a place to put whatever is on your mind out there. As time progressed, LeVan and some of the other 1500+ members began to see posts or get messages from mothers or moms-to-be in need – financially and/or emotionally. Some needed things to help care for their children and others turned to the group for advice about abusive relationships. Members have given cribs, blankets, diapers, kids’ clothing and money to moms in need. LeVan states that they have even helped two women escape abusive relationships.
While the group’s main focus is to provide a place to vent and asked for advice, they are now trying to raise the funds necessary to file paperwork to become a 501c3 nonprofit organization. Their goal is to continue to help moms as much as possible. The group sells custom-made jewelry, decals and other items at a table in the Barnyard Flea Market on Highway 1 in Lexington. LeVan says they also have fliers available at the table about their group and what they are trying to accomplish. They’ve even held a carwash. Most recently, they set up a Go Fund Me page.
