Caskey and Spires safe in Lexington County house races
Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) – Micah Caskey, a popular first term incumbent in SC House District 89, and Kit Spires of Pelion, who has held SC House 96 for a number of terms, both easily defeated their opponents to sweep past the primaries last night on their way to another term in Columbia. Caskey was challenged by jovial West Columbia attorney Billy Oswald, a person that everyone seems to love but just can’t ever get elected when he runs for any office higher than one at the county level. Spires’ challenger was once again Perry Finch, a Lexington based businessman who runs almost every two years, but never really seems to sink any money or effort into unseating the popular Pelion pharmacist who has won multiple terms. Finch puts up the same five or six campaign signs, goes through a few of the motions, and then goes down in defeat election after election.
In the Caskey versus Oswald race, Caskey won almost 65% of the vote while Oswald did receive a bit over 35%, a respectable number given how popular Caskey is. It’s hard to win a race against someone whom no one has a bad thing to say about. Likewise, in the Spires versus Finch race, it was a carbon copy with the incumbent gaining a 65% to 35% advantage there as well.
With no Democrats challenging these two, there is a virtual lock unless someone could mount a successful write-in campaign before November, something in Lexington County that’s not about to happen.
