First Annual Daddy and Me 5k set for June 16
Springdale, SC - Springdale is hosting their First Annual Daddy and Me 5k Run at 2915 Platt Spring Road on Saturday, June 16 at 8:00 am.
The 5k is hosted by Serve and Connect, sponsored by Iron Sharpens Iron, and the proceeds benefit the Midlands Fatherhood Coalition, a nonprofit organization focused on engaging fathers in the positive support of their children. Registration begins at 6:30 am and the 5k starts at 8:00 am.Preregistration is available at www.strictlyrunning.com. The run will be laid out throughout the town. Registration is $25 with a t-shirt and $20 without a t-shirt. There is also the option to sign up for $10 for those who do not wish to obtain a bib and be timed.
Now the father of four boys himself, Springdale’s Chief of Police Kevin Cornett came up with the idea for the run. “I spent most of my teenage years without a father figure to guide me,” shared Chief Cornett. “I taught myself to shave and properly tie a tie. I learned to be a gentleman from television and from the random people that touched my life in some way. I wanted a way to celebrate dads and also raise money to support the Midlands Fatherhood Coalition. That is where I got the idea for the 5K,” Chief Cornett said.
The run will celebrate the importance of fathers in families right in time for Father’s Day. The message is simple: dads matter! Opening ceremonies led by Fraendy Clervaud of WACH Fox will kick-off the morning. Father-child duos are encouraged. Following the run, there will be a Daddy Olympics that includes fun (and funny) games for dads, think racing around with a stroller and changing diapers. Awards will be presented, including a Gold Medal for the Daddy Olympics. DJ Rick Smooth, a graduate of the Midlands Fatherhood Coalition, will be playing music throughout the event.
