Springdale PD receives D.A.R.E. award at banquet held last week
Springdale, SC (Paul Kirby) – Last week, the Springdale Police Department was recognized by the D.A.R.E. Association of SC at the annual SCASRO/DASC awards banquet. The department was named the 2018 D.A.R.E. Agency of the Year and the award was presented to Chief Cornett on behalf of his staff and the town.
Chief Cornett brought the D.A.R.E. program back to Springdale Elementary School four years ago. At that time the department had two certified D.A.R.E. instructors. Chief Cornett was one of the instructors and actively taught the fifth-grade students with another officer who was assigned to patrol duties. Now, the chief is the department’s sole instructor and ensures that the program continues by teaching all the fifth-grade classes at Springdale Elementary School by himself.
The course has evolved over the years from just a program that teaches resistance to drugs. Now, the program focuses on building positive relationships with the youth within the community. This is something that the chief feels very strongly about and has demonstrated through his efforts like the department’s award winning National Night Out that’s held each fall, the Daddy & Me 5-K that was held last Saturday, and several other programs and events.
