Columbia man identified as person found floating in Congaree River

Cayce, SC (Paul Kirby) - Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher has released the identity of the person recovered from the Congaree River just before 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday June 27, 2018. According to Coroner Fisher, the body was Thomas Wright “Antwon” Sumter, 50, of Columbia. He was recovered from the river by the Cayce Department of Public Safety after being spotted floating near the Blossom Street Bridge.

Fisher said that an autopsy has been scheduled for June 28, 2018 to determine the cause of Sumter’s death. The Cayce Department of Public Safety is investigating the incident in an attempt to determine why and how Sumter’s body was floating in the river.
