Fire burns home on West 8th Street in Swansea Tuesday morning
Swansea, SC (Paul Kirby) – A house caught fire on West 8th Street near where it intersects with South Breacon Avenue in Swansea Tuesday morning, doing heavy damage to it before the fire service could bring it under control. Someone reported the fire straight to the fire station instead of calling 911, which may have delayed the response of the fire crews slightly. Firefighters came across the radio at about 6:45 a.m. saying that they had received the report and were enroute.
They arrived in a very short period. When the first engine and crew from Swansea arrived, they reported that they had heavy flames and smoke coming from the home. Once the next engine arrived, they stretched a hose to a fire hydrant close by while the firefighters attacked the flames. Within about 15 minutes, they had knocked the fire down. As more teams arrived they began searching the home to make sure that everyone had gotten out. It took about an hour to ensure that the fire was completely out and there were no hidden embers that might rekindle.
The battalion chief that was in command of the fire requested the assistance of the American Red Cross for the people who were displaced by the fire. It is still too early to estimate the dollar damage done to the home. Crews are looking at what may have started the fire.
