Blowfish-RedWolves doubleheader hampered by weather; “Fish drop first contest, second one delayed by

Game will be completed on July 31 at Lexington County Baseball Stadium

Florence, SC - (James Bowers) - Mother nature has been known to rear her ugly head a time or two during baseball season. She took it upon herself to cut short the second game of a Wednesday evening doubleheader between the Florence RedWolves and Lexington County Blowfish at Florence’s Sparrow Stadium in the form of heavy fog. The dreadful visibility forced officials to postpone the conclusion of the contest, which at that point was in the seventh inning with the Blowfish holding a 3-2 lead. The game will get back underway on July 31 at the Lexington County Blowfish Stadium, as that is date of the next regularly scheduled meeting between the Fish and Wolves. The Blowfish hope to hang on for victory over the last inning.

The first game of Wednesday’s doubleheader did not go Lexington County’s way. Marshall McDonald’s club dropped the game by an 8-6 deficit. The RedWolves struck first when Greg Vaughn Jr. scored on a McLendon Sears single. Then a Brock Hallum single got Chris Botsoe home. McLendon Sears got to third on a Blowfish error. He was able to make it a 3-0 game when a Kyle Gensler swing forced a fielder’s choice.

The top of the third saw the Blowfish get on the board when Zack Spivey made it home on an error. Momentum stayed with the Redwolves in the fifth as Griffin Hulecki, Ben Peden, Greg Vaughn, Jr. and McLendon Sears all scored to make it 7-1 in favor of Florence. A Ben Peden homer in the sixth made it 8-1 Florence. In the top of the seventh, the Fish made a go at a rally. Channing Painton scored on a Zack Spivey single. Then a big double by Chris Clary gave runs to Zack Spivey and Jamie Taylor. A Sean Parsons homer scored Chris Clary, putting the ‘Fish within two runs. With two outs, however, the rally could have ended at any moment, and that fear was realized when Cole Tate grounded out.

The second game saw the RedWolves get on the board first again when Joe Simone scored on a Greg Vaughn double. The game got quiet until the bottom of the fifth inning when a Vaughn single got Griffin Hulecki across home plate to make it 2-0 Florence. The Blowfish gained momentum in the top of the seventh. A Jared Williams single with the bases loaded scored Aaron Adams and Channing Painton. Chandler Jenkins’ single scored Patrick Price. It was then that fog began to set in at Sparrow Stadium; The visibility made continuation of play a non-starter. The teams are already set to meet again on July 31 in Lexington, so the conclusion of the game will take place then. Jared Williams’ two hits led the Blowfish offense in game two. TJ Shook pitched five innings, giving up seven hits. CJ Smith gave up one hit in his sole inning on the mound.

The Florence RedWolves benefited from Greg Vaughn, Jr. and Joe Simone, who had two hits each to go with singles by Griffin Hulecki, Ben Peden, Brody Gibson and McLendon Sears. Will Abbott pitched six innings, allowing six runs. Mark Leonard allowed two hits in half an inning.

The Blowfish get back to action Thursday evening, hosting the Macon Bacon at Lexington County Baseball Stadium. The first pitch is at 7:05 pm. The RedWolves will take the field Thursday as well for a showdown with Savannah.
