Lexington Wildcats Head Coach Woolbright optimistic about 2018 LHS football
Second-Year coach will settle on starting quarterback after Jamboree
Lexington, SC (James Bowers) - Coach Perry Woolbright’s Wildcats turned the heads of SC prep football fans in 2017 putting together a 7-4 record in the head coach’s first season at the helm of the Wildcat program. Though Key contributors like QB Chase Crouch, WR Mitchell McGee, and Safety Parker VanCoutren graduated, Woolbright will welcome back proven, productive players like William Crouch, Forrest Alvarez, and Jordan Hiller. Woolbright has not settled on a starting quarterback; contenders include sophomore Cal Herndon, senior Dylan Kicklighter, and Knight Blake. The coach said the team will settle on a starter after a pair of jamborees the team will take part in later in the month of August.
Defensively, the team will face the same situation as they do on offense. While having experienced players like Alvarez will be helpful, Woolbright and company will need to replace several departures, particularly at the linebacker position. This is another picture that the coach hopes will become clearer after the slate of scrimmages and jamborees early in the month.
Looking at the 2018 schedule, which features matchups with familiar rivals like Irmo, Batesburg-Leesville, River Bluff, andGilbert, as well as other tough games against Spring Valley and Dutch Fork, Woolbright says that this is the type of slate where you “circle every game.” “We’ve got a tough non-region schedule which will prepare us for the great teams in our region like Dutch Fork and Chapin,” Woolbright said. “The kids are gonna have to play their best football in every single game.” The Wildcats will compete in Region 5-5A alongside Chapin, Dutch Fork, Lexington, River Bluff, and White Knoll.
Lexington’s regular season begins on August 17 with a road game against Irmo at W.C. Hawkins Stadium. You can catch the Wildcats in preseason action before then. Lexington will host a Sportsarama at Wildcat Hollow on August 10, and compete in another Jamboree at Chapin High School the next day.
