Gilbert Elementary School evacuated again due to smoke and small fire

LEXINGTON, S.C. — At about 12:45 p.m., Gilbert Elementary School staff noticed smoke coming from a restroom. The smell was investigated and there was a small fire. GES administrators immediately evacuated the school. The fire service was notified and arrived almost immediately.

According to the school district, all students and staff are safe and accounted for and were waiting outside while fire service cleared the area of smoke. The fire service left the facility at approximately 1:15 p.m.

Everyone is now back in the building however, there is still a faint smoke smell in the area of the fire. Currently, the school's SRO is looking into the cause of the fire.
