Gilbert Elementary student caught on video setting fire at school

Gilbert, SC (Paul Kirby) - Lexington County School District One's safety and emergency services director responded to Gilbert Elementary School today after a small fire was reported and quickly extinguished in a restroom. That small fire did cause the evacuation of the school. That director was able to pull video from the video cameras located throughout the school and found that a student set the fire that caused the evacuation of the school.

In accordance with district policy and procedure, administrators contacted the student’s parents and suspended the student while he waits for a meeting with the district’s hearing officer.

According to Mary Beth Hill, the district's chief communications officer, the district does not tolerate threats to our students’ safety and believes that every child deserves a safe learning environment.
