Irmo, SC (Paul Kirby) – The driver of the car that was travelling east in the westbound lanes of I-26 near St. Andrews and Piney Grove Roads early this morning has died. According to Lance Corporal David Jones of the SC Highway Patrol, the accident happened at approximately 5:20 a.m. Wednesday.
Police agencies across the area had just been notified that the car was travelling the wrong direction on the interstate when the sedan that was going the wrong-way struck a pickup truck head-on. The driver of the sedan was pulled from the wreckage and transported to a trauma center but was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital. The driver of the truck sustained only minor injuries.
The SCHP is in charge of the investigation. The Lexington County Coroner’s Office will release the name of the deceased after his or her family has been properly notified.
