Home burns on Lewie Road near Dwight Price Road northwest of Gilbert
Gilbert, SC (Paul Kirby) – A home caught fire and burned just before 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 1300 block of Lewie Road. This is near its intersection with Wayne Price Road northwest of Gilbert. The caller who dialed 911 reported that heavy smoke was coming out of the attic of the house and had banged on the doors, but it appeared as if no one was in the home.
Firefighters and equipment from across Lexington County’s North Region were dispatched as was additional help from the Batesburg-Leesville Fire Department. When the first fire engine and crew arrived, they reported that they had heavy flames and smoke coming from the home and designated it a working fire. They had crews search the home for people several times, but apparently no one was home.
The driveway of the home was long and narrow, so the first truck laid a large supply hose down the drive into the fire so when other trucks arrived, they would not have to commit to the narrow lane. Instead, they established a rural water supply operation out on Lewie Road and began pumping water from that point down the drive to the fire scene. The incident commander requested that the sheriff’s department shut the road down to prevent cars from impeding the movement of the emergency traffic and for the safety of the fire crews. The deputies closed the road and it stayed closed for several hours.
Firefighters were finally able to bring the stubborn fire under control at about 6:00 p.m. The crews stayed on the scene for some time after that making sure that the blaze was completely out, and all the equipment was picked up and the trucks were reloaded. The county has not said what caused the fire, how much monetary damage was done to the home, or if anyone was hurt as a result of the blaze.
