Lexington PD’s Bed-E-Bye Twitter campaign aimed at curbing car thefts and auto tampering
Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) – Lexington PD is taking an innovative approach to curbing car thefts and auto tampering cases with a campaign that is intended to remind citizens to simply lock their vehicle’s doors at night. The campaign sends out a tweet over the PD’s Twitter feed at 9:00 p.m. reminding you to check and make sure you locked your car.
Over the past year, cases of auto theft and tampering have increased dramatically not just in Lexington, but across the county. Here’s the thing; in hundreds of those cases, the vehicles that were either stolen or stolen from were left unlocked by their owners. Simply locking your car’s doors each day when you park can prevent someone from stealing your things or the car itself. Most of these thefts have been crimes of opportunity. Thieves simply go through an area and try every parked car’s doors until they find one unlocked.
We have affectionately dubbed Lexington’s Twitter reminders their Bed-E-Bye campaign, although it appears they’ve decided to call it #9pmroutine. About the time you begin to yawn, the sweet tweet of birds from your phone or device reminds you that it’s time to check the door locks. We’re not sure whose idea this was, but it’s a brilliant use of social media to fight crime. It may rank right up their with Trooper Bob’s famous emoji campaign that won several national awards.
