Home heavily damaged by fire in Cayce’s Riverland Park neighborhood

Cayce, SC (Paul Kirby) – A house in the Riverland Park neighborhood of Cayce caught fire Friday morning shortly after 9:00 a.m. destroying the single-family home. Firefighters from the Cayce Department of Public Safety were assisted by personnel and equipment from West Columbia and Lexington County in battling the blaze. The fire was reported in the 200 block of Riverland Drive near the banks of the Congaree River.

Cayce personnel said that there was live ammunition in the home that was on fire that caused some concern while they were on the scene. Although ammunition that’s loose and not loaded in a gun’s chamber will not go off with the same ferocity as a chambered round, it still can be a danger to firefighters especially, if the personnel are close to the rounds when they ignite. There were no injuries reported as a result of the fire.

Chief Byron Snellgrove of the Cayce Department of Public Safety said that his department would try to do a cause and origin investigation, however he felt like that would be difficult to pinpoint given the amount of damage done to the home. The American Red Cross was notified to assist the occupants in the recovery from the fire.
