UPDATE: Firefighters free occupant trapped in head-on collision near Gilbert
Gilbert, SC - 3:15 pm (Paul Kirby) – A head-on collision near 1137 Broad Street in Gilbert had the road blocked while firefighters and Lexington County EMS personnel worked to extricate someone from the wreckage of the vehicles that are involved in the wreck. This address is between Quinton Ricard and Cotton Branch Roads west of the town.
The call regarding the crash came in just about 3:00 p.m. Monday, bringing fire crews from Gilbert and Samaria as well as a special team and the on-duty battalion chief from Lexington. Firefighters quickly went to work with hydraulic extrication tools cutting the patient from the twisted vehicle. They were able to free the trapped person just after 3:30 p.m.
Law enforcement officers from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department responded to assist with traffic as the rescuers worked in the road. Troopers from the SCHP are in charge of the investigation of the accident since it is outside the town limits of any municipality.
The condition and number of patients involved is not known. No request for a helicopter was made which would indicate that the EMS crew intends to transport the injured by ground ambulance.
At 3:30 p.m. Monday afternoon, motorist were still being asked to avoid that portion of Broad Street and take an alternate route. Law enforcement allowed the road to reopen once the rescuers and all involved in the wreck were safely out of the street.
