Man struck and killed while crossing Augusta Hwy. at Calks Ferry Road Tuesday afternoon identified

Gilbert, SC (Paul Kirby) – A 44-year-old man who was struck and killed by a vehicle while attempting to cross Augusta Highway on foot in front of the Dollar General store at Calks Ferry Road west of Lexington High School, has been identified by the Lexington County Coroner’s Office. According to Coroner Fisher’s staff, Santiago Mendez Molta died on the scene as a result of injuries he sustained in the collision. The accident happened at 4:45 p.m.

Witnesses who passed shortly after this happened said that Molta was down on the ground and people were attempting to revive him with CPR in the median of Augusta Highway immediately after the accident. Lexington County EMS personnel and firefighters from Round Hill, Gilbert, and Lexington responded to assist, but Molta’s injuries were too great. Officials say that the vehicle that struck the man immediately stopped and its driver began to render aid as well. Law enforcement officers also assisted.

The SCHP is in charge of the investigation into the incident.
