33-year-old Aiken man killed walking on Fairview Rd. at I-20 overpass Saturday night

Samaria, SC (Paul Kirby) – A 33-year-old Aiken man was killed Saturday night while walking in Fairview Road (US Hwy. 178) at the overpass to I-20. The accident happened at about 9:00 p.m. This location is within a few hundred yards of Lexington County’s Samaria fire station.

According to Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher, Jessie M. James, 33, of Aiken was walking in the road when he was struck by a vehicle. James was pronounced dead at the scene due to his injuries. The driver of the vehicle, who was not injured, stopped at the scene to render aid until rescuers began to arrive.

Emergency officials completely closed Fairview Road on the overpass to I-20 for some time while the South Carolina Highway Patrol conducted their investigation. They have not released why James was walking in the road when he was struck.
