Mobile home destroyed by fire near Swansea and Gaston after Midnight Saturday night

Swansea, SC (Paul Kirby) – A mobile home was destroyed by fire in the 300 block of Sonny Boy Poole Road just off Fallaw Road Sunday morning. The fire was reported between midnight and 12:30 a.m. bringing firefighters from most of the fire stations southeast of Edmund Hwy. to help fight the flames. When the first fire apparatus and personnel arrived on scene, they reported that the home was fully involved in flames.

The first fire officers on the scene had most of the equipment staging on Fallaw Road while the first engine went down Sonny Boy Poole to make the initial fire attack. Bringing in all the equipment at once would have packed the one-way-in, one-way-out road with trucks and made it difficult, if not impossible, for firefighters to carry the water in using their tankers. Large quantities of water are required to extinguish a blaze of any size. There are few fire hydrants in the area and tankers are crucial to supply water in these situations.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control fairly quickly, but the home is considered a total loss. Crews returned to the scene at the request of sheriff’s deputies later Sunday morning as they noticed that a few hot-spots were beginning to smoke and show some small flames again.

Lexington County has not released the cause of the blaze, an estimate of the value of the loss, or if anyone was injured by the fire.
