Cayce-West Columbia Chamber closely monitoring weather in regard to 2018 Holiday Parade of Lights

Cayce-West Columbia, SC (Paul Kirby) – The Cayce West Columbia Chamber of Commerce is joining the community in hopes that the wet weather will hold off just long enough for them to hold their annual Holiday Parade of Lights this Saturday night. This parade, one of the most popular in SC, is held annually at night and features floats, trucks, golf carts, dignitaries, businesses of all types, and even marching bands adorned with twinkling lights from stem to stern to kick off Christmas in the community. The entire area is holding their breath and you can hear quiet chants of, “Rain, rain, go away!” across the area.

On Monday, the chamber’s Director Richard Skipper sent an e-mail to members and the media explaining the chamber’s policy in case inclement weather moves in as is now predicted. In that message, Skipper said that the decision regarding the parade which is slated to begin at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday the 8th, will be made on Thursday afternoon. Skipper said that the rumor that the parade will be held rain or shine is NOT true. He said that if the roads are wet, they create a safety hazard with trucks and trailers trying to stop. Although rain would create less of a crowd and fewer people would be in attendance, there would be a higher risk of injuries and liability.

Due to the amount of law enforcement shifts involved in blocking roads and controlling crowds during the parade, the chamber’s leaders need to make a decision as soon as possible for scheduling purposes. Therefore, they plan to make the initial call to go or not by close of business on Thursday. If they make the call to have the parade, there still could be a chance they have to cancel the day of the event if the weather worsens. Hopefully, they can minimize the chance of a “day of”cancellation by making their decision on Thursday.

Chamber leaders have said that if they do not have the parade this weekend, the makeup day would be the following Saturday, December 15th at the same time If the 15th is rained out, the parade would have to be cancelled and everyone would have to wait until next year. Follow local media closely for the word on the parade’s status. The Lexington Ledger will put out the chamber’s decision Thursday over their app that can be downloaded free from either app store. It will also be shared on their social media sites.
