Columbia man, West Columbia woman die in wrong-way collision on I-77 Monday
Cayce, SC (Paul Kirby) – A 79 year-old Columbia man, and a 42 year-old West Columbia woman, died Monday morning in a wrong-way vehicle collision at the northbound on ramp to I-77 from I-26 Monday morning. The crash happened at approximately 7:20 a.m.
Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said later Monday that John L. McCravy of Columbia was traveling in the wrong direction on I-77 northbound when he collided head-on with another vehicle. McCravy was transported from the scene to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later. The driver of the other vehicle, Ann-Marie S. Vargas-Kincade, 42, of West Columbia was pronounced dead at the scene. Both of the drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision.
An investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol into how McCravy ended up in the wrong lane on the interstate is ongoing.
