NOTE: Several of you sent us photos of the crashed cars. We will release the ones with no patients’ pictures in them once Coroner Fisher has made all family notifications.
Oak Grove, SC (Paul Kirby) – A car wreck in front of the San Jose’s restaurant on Augusta Road at Laurel Road killed one and trapped another on Tuesday evening. The collision occurred about 7:00 p.m. bringing law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, and firefighters to the scene to care for the injured.
Firefighters from the county’s Oak Grove Fire Station were the first dispatched to assist EMS. While enroute, callers continued to notify the county’s 911 communications center of the wreck and advised that it appear as if several people were trapped in the wreckage of one of the cars. At this point, Engine 9’s crew asked for additional equipment and manpower from Lexington and Pine Grove. When they arrived on location, they found two heavily mangled cars and two trapped in the crashed vehicles. They immediately began using power equipment to free them while EMS began caring for the patients. In a matter of minutes, they reported they had freed one person, but the other was deceased.
Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher arrived, and her office took control of the scene while troopers from the SCHP began their accident investigation. The county fire service loaned Squad 10 out of the Lexington Fire Station to that effort by leaving that unit at the scene to provide high-intensity lighting to illuminate the area where the twisted cars had come to rest. As of 4:20 a.m. Wednesday, no details were available from the SCHP and the Lexington County Coroner’s Office had not released the name of the person who died. They will provide that once all family members have been notified.
