Overturned vehicle traps one under car in West Columbia

West Columbia, SC (Paul Kirby) – A vehicle overturned and struck a utility pole trapping one person underneath it Wednesday afternoon in the 1500 block of Charleston Highway. The call regarding this accident came in just after 4:00 p.m. Fire equipment originally responded from the West Columbia Fire Department and they were backed up by trucks and personnel from the Cayce Department of Public Safety.

Firefighters deployed inflatable air bags to lift the car off the injured person. The patient was then turned over to Lexington County EMS for transport to a local hospital. West Columbia police officers assisted on the scene with traffic. They and the firefighters notified the utility company of the damaged utility pole so they could respond and repair it.
