Lexington County Sheriff’s Department confirms fatal shooting near Pelion by Richland County deputy

Pelion, SC (Paul Kirby) – The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department has now confirmed that someone was fatally shot near Pelion by a Richland County deputy this morning. They released that information via Twitter.

The Sheriff’s Department said that, “Lexington County deputies have secured the scene of an officer-involved shooting in which a suspect was fatally wounded by a Richland County deputy.” This incident happened on Hilton Yonce Road just east of Pelion. The Sheriff’s Department said that this happened after a multi-jurisdictional pursuit that included Richland County, the South Carolina Highway Patrol, and the Lexington Police Department.

The suspect initiated the pursuit in the Town of Lexington after a Lexington police officer, who was responding to a report of someone breaking into cars, confirmed the car the suspect was driving was stolen and attempted to stop him. Lexington officers discontinued their pursuit at some point and SC state troopers took over. The chase crossed into Richland County where their Sheriff’s Department got involved. They eventually chased the stolen vehicle back into Lexington County and to the dead-end of Hilton Yonce Road. Residents of the road reported hearing multiple shots after the pursuit ended.

We will continue to update this story as more is released.
