Lexington man dies in car accident Tuesday afternoon near Gilbert

Gilbert, SC (Paul Kirby) - Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said Wednesday morning that a Lexington man died in a car accident near Gilbert Tuesday afternoon. Deputy Coroner Candace Berry said that Coroner Fisher has now identified the man who perished as Lester Jerome Blackwell, III, 52, of Lexington. Fisher said that the collision occurred on Spring Hill Road at Spool Wheel Road in Gilbert at approximately 4:10 p.m. Tuesday.

According to Coroner Fisher, Blackwell was traveling on Spring Hill Road, stopped at the stop sign, and then proceeded to cross Spool Wheel Road. His vehicle was struck in the intersection by a vehicle traveling on Spool Wheel Road. Fisher said that Blackwell was wearing a seatbelt when the incident occurred. The driver of the other vehicle, who was also wearing a seatbelt, sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The collision remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
