Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) - The Arc of the Midlands, an organization that advocates for all people with intellectual and developmental disabilities while providing employment, training, and companion services to adults with these lifelong disabilities, wants you to know about their Second Wave Coffee & Books, a cool coffee shop and book store and their Midlands Thrift, a store where you can find all sorts of eclectic items at a huge discount.
Their Second Wave Coffee & Books is located at 529 South Lake Drive just a stone’s throw from Main Street. It’s right on the banks of the old Mill Pond that drained during the floods of 2015. They have recently expanded their hours so that they are open in the evenings and on weekends too. They will also host fun events meant to bring the community together. They’ve even started serving beer and wine in the evenings to attract more adults looking to relax and socialize with others. They brew coffee with locally roasted beans from Loveland and have beer on tap.
Second Wave will now be open Monday through Friday from 8a.m. until 8 p.m., Saturdays from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Some upcoming special events include:
Tuesday, April 16: Karaoke night at 7 pm with happy hour specials between 4-7 pm at Second Wave.
Saturday, April 20: Community Egg Hunt at Second Wave starting at 10 am. Three egg hunts for different groups. 10 am - 3-5 years; 10:30 - 6-10 and 11 - special needs.
Every Thursdays is also Trivia Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Second Wave. Come test your knowledge with a great game of trivia while enjoying the fellowship and beer and wine selections.
Second Wave also hosts a special event on Fridays and Saturdays called Suds 'n Spuds that starts at 4 p.m. There is beer or wine of choice with stuffed baked potato for just $6. Of course, that great coffee is available too. According to one of their staffers, Natalie Szrajer, there are more special events in the works as well.
Midlands Thrift is the store that has a large part in supporting their mission. It’s located at 807 South Lake Dr. just before the railroad track if you’re headed to Lexington on the right. Stop by and browse for that great deal.
