St. Andrews, SC (Paul Kirby) A 51-year-old Columbia man died Monday evening after his pickup truck was struck by a tractor-trailer truck trapping him inside its cab. Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher has identified the man as Calvin Ray Casson. He was pronounced dead at the scene of his injuries.
According to the investigation, Casson was traveling east on Fernandina Road in the St. Andrews area when a tractor-trailer, traveling west on I-26, left the right side of the interstate, went through a fence, and collided head-on with Casson’s pickup truck. He was pinned in his older model truck for some time, and firefighters from the Irmo Fire District had to use hydraulic tools to cut him from the passenger compartment. Casson was wearing a seatbelt when the collision occurred. The driver of the tractor-trailer suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The collision remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
