Lexington-Richland School District Five first in the county to close because of statewide teacher’s
Irmo/Chapin, SC (Paul Kirby) – Lexington-Richland School District Five, the district that covers the Irmo and Chapin communities, has decided to close schools for the day on Wednesday, May 1, 2019. This was done in response to the number of teachers who had requested leave to attend the teachers’ rally that is being held at the statehouse that day. Currently, only a few more districts statewide have decided not to hold classes that day. They are in other parts of the state.
In a message sent to parents and prominently displayed on the district’s website, administrators said that as with any other teacher’s absence, School District Five staff participating in the May 1 event were required to submit requests for personal leave. After monitoring leave requests over the past few days and considering unanticipated additional leave that could occur on May 1st, the district made the decision to close schools Wednesday.
The message made it clear that the district worked through several possible contingency plans, including but not limited to utilizing substitute teachers and district staff. After carefully reviewing those plans, it was decided that the staffing needed to ensure normal school operations on May 1st could not be provided. School District Five’s focus is always on their students and their safety. The district further said, “It is out of an abundance of caution that the decision to close schools Wednesday was made.”
With limited make-up day options in the remaining academic year, the district’s administration has said they anticipate the missed school day will be made up at the end of the year upon the review and approval of the district’s Board of Trustees.
Offices, including the district office, will remain open on May 1st. All schools and offices will also operate on normal schedules on Thursday, May 2nd. Any future announcements will be made using the school district’s automated telephone system, the district website, social media and local media outlets.
