Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher identifies child shot, killed in home invasion
Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) – Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said Tuesday afternoon that eight-year-old Mason Hanahan was the child that was shot and killed early Tuesday morning in what the Sheriff’s Department has called a home invasion. This occurred in the 100 block of Cedar Vale Drive near Oak Grove. Fisher said that Mason was treated at the scene and then transported by Lexington County EMS but was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at an area hospital as the result of an apparent gunshot wound.
The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department is continuing to investigate exactly what led up to Mason’s shooting and death. They say they believe someone entered the home he lived in and a gun battle erupted. During the exchange of fire with the unidentified assailant, Mason and an adult male were both hit. The adult’s wound is non-life threatening. The suspect, who was said to be wearing a mask, then fled the scene. At this time, that suspect has not been taken into custody.
