South Congaree, SC - A vehicle accident on West Dunbar Road has claimed a life Thursday night. The accident happened around 9:00 p.m. on the road that runs between Edmund Highway and Emmanuel Church Road. Its short length passes Southland Memorial Gardens, skirts the town limits of South Congaree, and is bordered by property of the Columbia airport along much of its length.
When the first emergency responders from the Lexington County Fire Service arrived on the scene of the wreck, they reported they had a vehicle off the road and into the woods. After further investigation, the officer in charge reported that they found a person in the vehicle with no pulse that was heavily trapped by the wreckage. They immediately began working to free that person with hydraulic rescue tools. Once the Lexington County EMS crew and supervisor arrived, they confirmed that the person had succumbed to their injuries and passed away prior to being extricated. The coroner’s staff was notified.
Deputies with Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher’s office are overseeing the death investigation. They will release the identification of the deceased once the family is notified. The SCHP is investigating the accident.
