South Congaree, SC (Paul Kirby) - Lieutenant Vince Silano and his trusty K9 partner Rens from the Pine Ridge Police Department did a demonstration as a part of the summer reading kickoff hosted by the South Congaree/Pine Ridge Branch Library last Friday. Officers from South Congaree Police Department along with crew of Ladder 5 from the Lexington County Fire Service conducted demonstrations as part of the program as well.
Lt. Silano said that Rens enjoyed entertaining the kids while he shared police K9 facts. This was a part of an effort to get kids involved with the police in a positive way. A few children were even chosen from the group to drop some items in random spots so Rens could show off his skills by doing a small article search. Following the search, they did a narcotic and apprehension demo.
According to those who attended, The Friends of The South Congaree / Pine Ridge Branch Library hosted a great event as a way to promote children reading throughout the summer. This prevents what’s known as the Summer Slide, a loss of some of the knowledge a student received during the previous school year while they are inactive academically over the summer.
Some of the activities at the event Friday included a slime and bubble table, moon rock area, and of course lots of books. Lt. Silano said that he and Rens appreciate the great community they work in and both appreciated being a part of this great event!
