DEATH for Timothy Jones, Jr.
Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) – After weeks of heart wrenching testimony that was at times tearful, angry, and ghastly, the same jury that found Timothy Jones, Jr. guilty of murdering his five children in 2014, has now sentenced him to death. Jones sat stoically as the judge read the verdict.
No one in the courtroom appeared surprised although Jones’ family had pleaded with the judge in the last week to show him mercy and spare his life. His attorneys had tried to say he was insane when he committed the heinous act, but a Lexington County jury would have none of that. They sided with the State of SC saying that they believed that Jones’ crime was so terrible that it deserved the ultimate penalty, death. The prosecution, led by Eleventh Circuit Solicitor Rick Hubbard, had a strong case that included forensic evidence and a confession. For most, there was no question Jones knew what he did was very wrong when he committed the murders. For many others, there was agreement that Jones deserved to die.
Jones will be quickly turned over to the SC Department of Corrections where he will remain, perhaps for years, before the sentence is actually carried out.
