Busbee teachers host summer reading events around Cayce

West Columbia, SC - Teachers at Busbee Creative Arts Academy want to make sure students are reading books this summer.

So they’re bringing the books to them.

The first of three Summer Reading at the Park events, held Wednesday at Granby Gardens in Cayce, offered students a chance to take books home to read, as well as a decorate-your-own cupcake bar.

“It’s our version of a bookmobile,” Busbee teacher Lisa Fisher said, as she and others sat on benches and chairs reading books at Wednesday’s gathering.

In fact the summer reading events were Fisher’s idea, according to Principal Stephanie Smith-Hucks, who came out Wednesday in support of reading, along with some other Busbee educators.

“We wanted to get the kids out into the community, to come and hang out and read,” Fisher said. “It’s a chance for us to remind them to read. And, if they’ve finished a book, they can come and get another.”

While the events are aimed primarily at Busbee’s middle school students, their siblings and kids of any age are invited to come out and bring a favorite book -- or check out a new one -- and spend some time reading.

Other upcoming summer reading events, set for 10-11:30 a.m.:

  • July 10: Riverland Park, Cayce

  • August 7: Fountains of Edenwood, Cayce
